Lucy VanPelt.
There's a lot of ways to describe her. Most aren't complimentry, even if they are true. She is cranky, short-tempered, bossy, overbearing, intimidating, self-centered, and easily insulted.
That's not all there is to my sister, however.
Lucy is protective of those she cares about. I don't remember how many times she has gone out, late Halloween Night or extremely early All Saints Day, to retrive me from whichever pumpkin patch I was waiting for the Great Pumpkin in. She'd drag me back home and tuck me into bed, under as many blankets as she could find. Nor have I ever had to worry about bullies. Once word gets around the school yard that the kid with the blue blanket is Lucy Van Pelt's brother, most kids quickly stop teasing me. Those who don't... Well, let's just say that Lucy has five very good arguments to dissuade the stubborn. Lucy is also willing to be seen as the worst baseball player on our team, though she's actually one of the best, to spare the other players the embarassment of costing us the game.
Lucy is - in her own way - supportive of those around her. She'll suggest that Charlie Brown direct the Christmas Play to give him self-confidence and get him excited about Christmas. She'll offer advice and constructive critism to anyone who gives her a nickel. If she thinks you're too naive, she'll do her best to teach you a health dose of skeptism can protect you from harm. For years, she tried to persuade me to face life without my security blanket in hand. She was always teaching our younger brother and myself - as well as her friends - things she knew about the world around us.
Lucy indulgies the interests of those she cares about. She's always willing to accompany me when I mail my letters to the Great Pumpkin, or indulge me in a debate about the Great Pumpkin's existance. Lucy spends hours listening to Schroeder play the piano and talk about Beethoven, though she lacks any interest in either subject. She also plays for Charlie Brown's baseball team, though she's long lost any interest in the game.
As you can see, Lucy Van Pelt is a very complicated person.

Date: 2007-11-06 12:20 am (UTC)I personally feel that Lucy loves her brothers. She just doesn't want to admit it because the only person she does admit to loving, doesn't love her back - or so she thinks.
In some ways, you really have to wonder about Lucy. Where does she get all this bossiness and meaness from? Why doesn't it show up in her brothers? Is it all a defense or is she just not good with expressing her feelings?
Charles Shultz, in an interview, once said that Lucy's weakness is her love for Schroeder, that she's very vulernable when that love is in control. That suggests that who ever Lucy really is is only visable to the reader when she's with Schroeder.
I think - and this truely is just speculation - that as Lucy's brother and the 'wise old man' of the Peanuts cast, Linus realizes this. He's only gotten fed up with her enough to physically fight her once and once reduced Lucy to tears by admiting to loving her.
