“Hey, Tony, do you have a moment?” Steve asked from the doorway of Tony’s office.

Not looking up from the holographic display, Tony replied, “Sure. What’s up?”

“I…” Steve sighed. “Tony, this is pretty important to me. Can you please put your work away for a little bit?”

Tony blinked, hands stilling. “This must be serious. You normally don’t mind.”

“I’m normally either bantering with you or sketching you,” responded Steve.

“True.” Setting down the ball-shaped interface, Tony laced his fingers together. “I’m listening.”

“I want you to promise me that you’ll stop me. If it turns out Kang’s accusations about me are right, I want you to stop me before our sun and humanity are lost.”

“What?!” gaped Tony. “Steve-”

“You’re the best choice, for a number of reasons,” Steve interrupted. “You’re a futurist, so you’d be able to see the event coming long before any of the others or even prevent it from happening.” He sighed and continued. “I’m not sure the others could or would be able to stop me. I don’t know if you heard Clint’s comment aboard the Damocles, but he was willing to sacrifice the planet to prevent Kang’s future. Neither Hank nor Jan can take me in a fight without help, and I doubt I’d leave the Ant Man helmet intact. T’Challa and Thor can take me down, but they have responsibilities in Wakanda and Asgard that might take priority. Hulk could do it, but General Ross is fanatical enough exploit Hulk fulfilling my request as a reason to reactive the Hulkbusters.”

“So you’re saying my reputation will survive taking you out?” Tony laughed bitterly. “Nice to know what you think of me, Cap.”

“No. Tony! Please listen,” begged Steve, covering Tony’s hands with his own. “I trust you enough to leave myself wide open to you in a fight, something I didn’t even do with Bucky. I trust you to figure out a non-fatal solution to this mess. You’re my best friend! You know I have a sense of humor and are willing to joke around with me! I’d be lost in this time without you, Tony.” Steve bowed his head. “Please believe me, Tony. You’re important to me.”

“Ok.” Tony met Steve’s gaze, “I believe you. I…” He sighed, “I guess this means you believe Kang.”

“Not really.”

“Then why do you want that promise from me?”

Steve curled his fingers around Tony’s hands, “Insurance. Just because your information says the enemy is nowhere nearby doesn’t mean you should leave your base camp deserted, ignore captured enemy intelligence, or be unwilling to have a backup plan or two. The request is my backup plan.” He shrugged, “To be honest, I doubt Kang’s information is completely accurate. How much information and how many records could’ve been lost in two centuries? How much misinformation could’ve survived because there was nothing to contradict it? Almost seventy years ago, the papers reported my death, but I’m still here. Who knows what else is wrong?”

“I see your point.” Glancing down at their intertwined hands, Tony added, “And if you want some assistance proving your innocence, I’d be happy to help, Steve.”

“Thanks, Tony. That means a lot to me.” Feeling greatly daring, Steve brushed his lips against the back of Tony’s hand. “I should let you get back to work. See you later.”

“How am I supposed to focus on work after that?” Tony asked the empty room.
