To make this guide easier to use and write, I broke it into several parts. Each section is ordered by distance from Walt Disney World, going from closest to farthest. If anyone thinks of a place I've missed, please let me know and I'll add it.

Dec. 12th, 2009 08:40 pmOne of my favorite blogs, Cake Wrecks is doing an informal charity drive.
Each day until Christmas, Jen picks a charity and requests her readers each donate $1 to them.
If you feel like donating, please do so. If not, at least go and check out the cakes and Jen's humor.
Thanks.

Vacation - Day 7 in review
Jun. 12th, 2009 04:31 pmWe visited the Nags Head Woods Preserve section of the Nature Conservancy, yesterday. Although the hiking trails themselves were not dog friendly, there was a gravel road or path that was. Dad took the dog down that road while Mom, bro, and I went on the quarter mile hiking trail. I've got pictures, but they'll be up once I can download them from the camera.
After the walk, we met up with some of family friends. The whole group spent some time at their beachfront rented house. Afterwords, we headed to a place called the "Jolly Roger". It's a restaurant/bar with nightly karaoke. It was a fun time, but I didn't get a chance to sing.
(I was exhausted when we left at midnight, so I'm not upset.)

Vacation - Day 6 in review
Jun. 11th, 2009 09:01 amYesterday we climbed Jockey's Ridge, the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast of the USA. Depending on the wind and weather, it varies between 80 and 100 feet tall.
We also brought the dog with us. She made it all the way to the top of the dune and even ran up the steepest section. Pictures of her pleased, happy grin of achievement will be up when we get home and can download them.
That evening, we finally got to see The Lost Colony for the first time in 14 years. I still enjoyed it.
Does anyone who's seen the play, do you remember if it had a different ending? One where Governor White comes back three years after he left and finds the fort/town deserted with "CRO" carved into a tree or post?
The reason I ask is because the ending we saw last night has them fleeing a Spanish Warship, and I don't know of any Spanish expeditions that ever mentioned encountering the Roanoke settlement.

The Lost Colony was canceled tonight on account of the weather. There were several lighting strikes in the area and heavier rain headed towards the outdoor theater. The house manager didn't want to risk the audience or the cast by continuing the show in those conditions.
So, we're going to try to go to show again tomorrow.
Here's hoping we have better weather.
(PS: I hate the movie Nights in Rodanthe. I wish they'd turn it off.)

Vacation - Day 5
Jun. 9th, 2009 06:25 pmMostly, we just chilled and relaxed today.
My mom, some of the other woman, and my brother went shopping for souvenirs. I chatted with friends and played with the dogs.
Tonight - if it doesn't storm - we're going to the outdoor play The Lost Colony. It's about the first English colony in the New World, on Roanoke Island, which mysteriously vanished.
If anyone wants details, I'll be happy to oblige.

Vacation: Day 4
Jun. 8th, 2009 06:48 pmToday, we visited the Elizabethan Gardens.
It has a mix of Old World and New World flowers, plants, and trees. The garden also had statues of Queen Elizabeth I and Virgina Dare. Virgina Dare was the first English child born in the New World, but no one knows what happened to her, her parents, or the rest of the colony.
Pictures when we get home, and more vacation updates tomorrow.

Vacation: Day 3
Jun. 7th, 2009 01:50 pmSo far we've visited the Wright Memorial at Kill Devil Hill.
But wait! Didn't the Wright Brothers take their famous first flights at Kitty Hawk?
The answer is both yes and no.
In 1903, the nearest town to the site the Wright brothers planned to use for testing their airplane was Kitty Hawk. The location itself was Kill Devil Hill. It was - at the time - giant sand dune with a field of sand surrounding it.
On that sandy apron, the Wright brothers made their four historic flights. The last and longest of which took 59 seconds to complete. (The first three were each about 12 seconds long.)
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Kill Devil Hill today is covered with grasses, wild flowers, and some prickly pear cacti, planted to keep the sand dune from blowing away. It's crowned with the Wright Brothers' Memorial, pictures to come later.
Down at the base, several yards away from the hill, stones mark the sites of Wrights' flights. Nearby sits a recreation of their base camp. A bit beyond that is the Airfield museum with a full sized model of a Wright Flier. (The only surviving original is in Dayton, Ohio, but even that is a later make than the original airplane.)
And that's basically the Wright Memorial at Kill Devil Hill.

Vacation: Day 2 in review
Jun. 7th, 2009 07:56 amYesterday, before we started out, we found out that the dog could sit on the AC unit very comfortably. Pictures will be put up later.
We arrived at Kill Devil Hills 1 pm. This was well before we could pick up the keys to the beach house, so we headed over to the National Seashore and visited Bodie Island. Because the National Seashore is a National Park, the dog is permitted there - with some restrictions. She is not allowed on any swimming/life-guarded beaches and she must be on a 6 foot leash at all times.
In other words, very mild restrictions upon her movement.
We visited the lighthouse and support structures at Bodie Island. The dog wasn't allowed to go in them, but she could - and did - walk the fields surrounding the lighthouse. She even met another dog, a Yorkshire Terrier named Coco, there.
Afterwords, it was time to pick up the keys and head to the beach house. It's 3 stories, has a pool and hot tub, three balconies, and four bedrooms. I'll post pictures when I get home.
We had lunch at a Mexican restaurant named La Fagata. The food was good and the ambiance wonderful, but the service was slow.
After everyone was settled in, all eight of us, sans dog, went to an expensive and delicious restaurant named "Owens Restaurant." I had a seafood platter, but I couldn't finish it all.

Vacation: Day 1
Jun. 5th, 2009 09:30 pmToday, we traveled for about eight hours to Fayetteville, North Carolina. It's about three hours from where we're planning to stay at for the rest of the week.
Although it's been raining off and on for most the drive, I have high hopes for week itself being sunny and clear.
The drive was long, and made longer by the dog deciding to camp out on me for several hours. Fortunately, I did manage to get some writing done.
More tomorrow.
